An eight-year-old boy was running down the street, hurrying to get to school. He was late for math class and could already imagine how the teacher, with her stern face, was going to scold him again—either for being late or for giving an unclear answer. He couldn’t stand those moments of humiliation. And today, to top it all off, the elevator wasn’t working, which made him even later.
“He’s going to scream again… he’s going to say I’m lazy again…” I thought as I hurried across the street.
Suddenly, her eyes fell on a gray car parked at the curb. In the passenger seat was a small boy, about her brother’s age. The child was crying, banging his fists on the glass, and hoarsely pleading for help. His cheeks were flushed, and he was breathing heavily. Inside the car, it was clearly very hot. There were no adults around.
The boy froze. Two emotions warred inside him: the fear of being late for an important class—and the horror of seeing the little boy, who was clearly in worse shape. He thought about his brother: “What if it were my brother and no one helped him?”
Without hesitating another second, he picked up a heavy rock from the ground and slammed it against the glass with all his might. The glass shattered and the car alarm went off. He carefully reached in and pulled out the crying child.
Minutes later, a woman came running—it was the boy’s mother. Her face was filled with tears and terror. The boy quickly explained what had happened. The woman, hugging her son tightly, thanked him again and again.
And he, wiping his hands on his shirt, simply sighed and continued on his way—to school. Along the way, he thought only of what to say to the teacher.
As expected, the teacher received it with great indignation:
— Late again! How many more times?! I’m going to call your parents!
— But I… — he began to say, but the words caught in his throat.
— I don’t care what you were doing out there. How many times have I told you not to be late to my class? Sit down, and come with your parents tomorrow.
The boy sat down at his desk, but at that moment something unexpected happened.
Suddenly, the classroom door opened. The woman from the street entered, accompanied by the school principal. The woman spoke loudly in front of the entire class:
—This boy saved my son’s life today. I wanted to tell everyone how brave and smart he is. Not every child his age would have done something like that…
The class fell silent. The teacher, confused, couldn’t say anything. The principal approached the boy and handed him a small box. Inside was an e-book reader.
“You did the right thing,” the principal said. “We’re all proud of you.”
The teacher, pale, looked at the boy and added in a low voice:
— I’m sorry… I didn’t know…
The boy wanted to say something, but at that moment he felt very happy.
He realized that even the harshest words from teachers don’t matter when you’ve done something truly important. Sometimes good deeds are more valuable than a lesson—the most important thing is to be a good person.
