Missing for 16 Years: Texas Mother’s Search Ends in Dramatic Rescue Linked to Junkyard Discovery

AUSTIN, Texas — For 16 years, Margaret Halbrook marked the same grim anniversary: the day in 1984 when her husband, Jim, and 8-year-old daughter, Lucia, vanished during a weekend road trip. Each year she paid for local TV stations to air their photos, praying someone might remember.

This year, the call came.

Police had found a crushed red Cadillac in a San Marcos junkyard — Jim’s prized 1979 DeVille, the car he and Lucia were last seen driving. The discovery would set off a chain of events that led to a rural farmhouse, an armed rescue, and the recovery of a daughter long believed lost forever.

The Cadillac in the Yard

On that October day in 1984, Jim and Lucia left Austin for a quick trip to Llano, planning to see the Hill Country’s fall colors. Margaret stayed behind to help her mother, Doris Barrett, with a move.

They never returned.

In mid-afternoon this year, Detective Carlos Reyes of the Austin Police Department called Margaret: a junkyard owner had recognized the car from a missing-persons segment on TV.

When Margaret and Doris arrived at Harrowe’s Auto Salvage, yellow tape ringed the rust-dull Cadillac, its body partially crushed. Margaret identified a dent on the chrome wheel cover Jim had made a week before the trip.

Dean Laam, the yard’s owner, said the car wasn’t logged in the system. A female employee told detectives she saw Reed Carroway, the yard’s head technician, bring it in.

Carroway, when located, claimed an older man had dropped it off, paying cash and walking away without giving his name. His description — tall, thin, gray hair, thick mustache, button-up shirt — stopped Margaret cold.

“That sounds like Jim,” she whispered.

A Blue Bag in the Office

Police searched Carroway’s locked office but found nothing tied to the disappearance. Later that day, Doris realized she’d left her prescription inhaler at the yard. Reed offered to retrieve it.

When he opened the door, Doris glimpsed a small blue handbag on a top shelf — identical to one Lucia carried everywhere in 1984.

Reed said it had belonged to his daughter, who “never used it.” He offered it to Margaret. Inside, a white tag had been heat-damaged to remove printed information.

Suspicious, Margaret and Doris took the bag to Bernett Antiques, where a vintage toy expert confirmed it was from a limited-edition 1983–84 Mattel Barbie accessory line. The tampered tag, he said, was no accident.

The Breakdown

Determined to bring the bag to Detective Reyes, they left the shop — and within blocks, Margaret’s car shuddered and lost braking power.

Reed’s pickup appeared almost immediately, with another man, Jason, inside. Jason said the brake line was leaking and offered to tow the car to the junkyard. Doris insisted on going to the police station instead.

Reed agreed — but minutes into the drive, Margaret noticed they weren’t heading toward the station.

From Ride to Abduction

“Change of plans,” Reed said coldly. Jason pulled a silenced handgun, forcing them to handcuff themselves and gagging them with cloths. He grabbed the blue handbag from Doris’s lap.

Reed drove down rural backroads to a dilapidated farmhouse with a battered camper outside. Inside, they were chained to a radiator in an office guarded by an older man named Micah.

When Reed and Jason left, Doris pleaded for help. Micah whispered that “Samantha” — his captors’ name for her — was Lucia, renamed four years earlier. After a long pause, he secretly called 911, giving their location.

Face-to-Face with ‘The Boss’

Before help arrived, the man in charge — identified later as 53-year-old fugitive Charlie Karns — entered. A drifter with a history of violent sexual assaults and suspected murders, Karns treated the women like entertainment.

He forced them to identify “Samantha” from a lineup of three young women. Margaret and Doris both pointed to a woman with a faint childhood scar on her eyebrow — Lucia.

The 24-year-old stood expressionless, eyes vacant. Karns ordered her to strip, then turned on Margaret. The assault was interrupted when Reed burst in: police had surrounded the property.

The Rescue

Karns grabbed a pistol from Reed and aimed at Margaret. Micah threw himself in front of her, taking two bullets. SWAT officers then breached the farmhouse, shouting for weapons to be dropped.

Reed and Jason surrendered. Karns lunged at an officer and was shot in the leg and shoulder before being taken into custody.

Margaret was freed and ran to Lucia, wrapping her in a blanket. “It’s me, it’s Mom,” she whispered. Lucia did not respond.

Paramedics stabilized Micah for transport; police began processing the scene.

Unraveling the Past

At the hospital, Detective Reyes filled in the missing years. According to Reed, who began cooperating after arrest, he was 10 when Karns — his step-uncle — lured Jim into giving them a ride.

That night in Llano, Karns drugged Jim, strangled him, and staged the scene to look like Jim had abandoned his family. Karns took Lucia, convincing her her mother was gone. With forged documents and constant relocation, he kept her hidden, renaming her Samantha.

Reed and an accomplice disposed of Jim’s body in a sinkhole and hid the Cadillac in the woods until Reed moved it to the junkyard last week to destroy it.

A Father’s Sacrifice

Micah Carroway — Reed’s father — told Margaret from his hospital bed that he’d long feared Karns but finally acted for “Samantha’s” sake. “I hope someday you can forgive me,” he said. Margaret squeezed his hand. “You risked your life to save us. There’s nothing to forgive.”

A Daughter Found

Lucia was moved to a private hospital room. Margaret and Doris sat on either side, speaking softly, reminding her she was safe. After nearly an hour, Lucia whispered her first words: “I’m so sorry for being so broken.”

“It’s not your fault,” Margaret said, tears in her eyes. “None of this is your fault. We’re together now.”

“I miss Daddy,” Lucia said, a single tear slipping down her cheek.

Charges and Next Steps

Karns faces multiple counts including kidnapping, aggravated sexual assault, and murder. Reed and Jason face kidnapping and accessory charges. Police have secured the blue handbag as evidence and are working to locate Jim Halbrook’s remains.

Authorities credit Micah’s bravery — and Margaret’s persistence — for breaking the case.

“The road to healing will be long,” Margaret said from the hospital. “But she’s home. That’s all that matters now.”
