He kicked out his pregnant wife for expecting a girl, but paid a fortune to have his mistress give birth to a boy in a private clinic. However, on the very day of the birth, something happened that would change his fate forever…

The morning dawned warm, with that golden sun that filters through the hills of  Guadalajara .
Lucía walked slowly through the small apartment, her enormous belly about to burst. Each step was difficult, but even so, she tenderly caressed her belly and whispered:

—“Hold on a little longer, my love… we’ll meet soon.”

But  Hector , her husband, didn’t even turn to look at her.
Since she became pregnant, the man who had once showered her with promises and sweet words had become a stranger. He complained about everything: the smell, the food, his tiredness. He treated her coldly, as if motherhood had made her invisible.

That night, while Lucía was excitedly folding the baby’s clothes, he uttered the phrase that broke her inside:

—“Next month you’re going to your mom’s ranch to have the kid. Everything here is so expensive. Back in town they take care of you for just a few pesos; here it’s at least ten thousand. I’m not going to throw money away just for the sake of it.”

Lucía looked at him, tears trembling in her eyes.
—“But Héctor, I’m already nine months pregnant… the trip is long, I could have complications…”

He shrugged, with a sneer.
“That’s your problem. There are midwives there. And I don’t want you here complaining all day.”

That night, Lucia realized that the man she had loved no longer existed.

Two days later, with an old suitcase and a broken heart, she boarded the bus to her hometown,  San Cristóbal de la Sierra .
Her mother,  Doña Rosario , was waiting for her at the terminal. Seeing her get off the bus so pale and thin, all she could do was hug her and cry.

—“My little girl… don’t cry anymore. Stay here with me. I’ll take care of you.”

Meanwhile, Hector, as soon as he saw her leave, ran straight into the arms of  Camila Ortega , his young secretary.
She was also pregnant… and swore to him that she was expecting a baby boy.

He felt like the luckiest man in the world.
—“Finally, my heir!” he boasted proudly.
He spared no expense: he admitted her to a luxury private clinic,  Hospital San Rafael , in a VIP suite, paying almost  one hundred thousand pesos .

On the day of the birth, Héctor arrived with a huge bouquet of flowers, beaming with happiness.
“My son has been born! He looks just like me!” he wrote to all his friends on WhatsApp, showing off a photo of the baby.

But that joy was not going to last long.

That same afternoon, a nurse called him to sign some papers. Hector walked smiling toward the neonatal ward.
When he opened the door, his heart sank.

Facing him, with a cold and severe look, was  Doña Rosario , his mother-in-law.

—“Mother-in-law?… What are you doing here?” he stammered, feeling sweat run down his back.

She placed a carton of milk on the table and said in a firm voice:

—“I came to see my son-in-law… and the son he boasts so much about.”

—“You’re misunderstanding, Doña Rosario… this girl is just a friend I’m helping…” —Héctor tried to justify himself, nervously.

But she raised her hand to silence him.
She took an envelope from her bag and slowly opened it.

—“Do you know what this is? It’s a DNA test. I asked the doctor to do it as soon as the baby was born. And guess what… the child isn’t yours, Hector.”

Hector’s face contorted. He froze, unable to speak.

—“That can’t be… Camila swore to me it was mine…”

Doña Rosario let out a bitter laugh, one of those that hurt more than a scream.

—“You scorned my daughter because you were expecting a girl. You threw her out on the street to save a few pesos. But you spent a hundred thousand on this woman. And for what? To raise another man’s child. See how life pays back, Hector? God never sleeps.”

She put the papers in her bag and walked toward the door.
Before leaving, she turned to look at him one last time.

—“Lucía is fine. She gave birth to a beautiful, healthy baby girl with the most beautiful eyes I’ve ever seen. And don’t worry… she already has a father. But that man is no longer you. From today on, neither my daughter nor my granddaughter needs a coward like you.”

He slammed the door shut.

Hector slumped in his chair, his head in his hands. Outside, a baby’s cry echoed in the hallway—the same cry that hours before had seemed like a miracle.
Now it was a mockery.

Weeks later, the clinic called him: he owed  more than 120,000 pesos .
Camila had disappeared, leaving everything in her name.
The apartment he had bought for her was under lien.
His bank account was empty. His pride was shattered.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Lucía was slowly recovering.
The afternoon sun bathed the fields, and  Doña Rosario  watched her tenderly as the young woman rocked her baby.

—“See, daughter? Life always puts everyone in their place. You have love… he is only to blame.”

Lucía kissed her daughter’s forehead and smiled through her tears.

The wind blew softly through the trees, and for the first time in a long time, Lucia breathed a sigh of relief.
