“Ma’am… I think my bed is full of ants and I can’t move my legs…”
On a cold afternoon in Cedar Falls, but transported here to Zaragoza, the 112 emergency call center maintained a steady stream of everyday calls. However, when Elisa Torres, an operator with twelve years of experience, heard that trembling voice on the other end of the line, she knew immediately that it wasn’t just another call.
“What’s your name, sweetheart?” Elisa asked with a professional gentleness that only those who have seen too much know how to use.
“My name is Lili… I’m six years old… and… my legs… they hurt a lot. I can’t close them… and… there are ants… I think…”
Elisa straightened her back. This didn’t sound like a simple childish fear.
“Lili, I’m going to help you. Are you home alone?”
“Yes… my mom is at work. She told me not to open the door to anyone…”
The little girl was sobbing. Her breathing was ragged, as if the pain were getting worse.
While keeping the little girl talking, Elisa began the process of tracing the call, asking for the address in simple phrases and guiding her step by step so the child could remember the apartment number, the color of the door, and any visual details that might help the firefighters and paramedics.
As the seconds ticked by, the situation became more urgent. Lili started saying that her bed “itches on the inside,” that her legs “are swollen,” and that she feels “very hot.” Elisa recognized the symptoms: it could be a severe allergic reaction from multiple stings. In such a young child, it was potentially life-threatening.
“Lili, listen to me, sweetheart. I want you to keep talking to me, okay? I’m sending help right now.”
“It hurts… am I going to die?”
“No, darling. I’m with you. I’m not going to leave you alone.”
The sound of rustling papers, broken voices, and rapid keyboard clicks filled the background of the emergency center as Elisa assigned top priority. The nearest fire truck, a mobile intensive care ambulance, and a police patrol car were dispatched immediately.
But just as Elisa was managing to calm Lili down, the little girl whispered something that made the operator’s heart sink:
“Elisa… I think there’s someone in the hallway…”
The line remained silent for two eternal seconds.
END OF PART 1 — Who’s in the hallway? An intruder, a neighbor… or something even more unexpected?
PART 2: Lili’s almost inaudible voice put Elisa on high alert. At headquarters, even two colleagues stopped to listen.
—“Lili, can you tell me what you hear?”
—“I think it’s… like footsteps. But I’m alone… I think…”
Elisa knew she couldn’t allow the girl to panic.
—“My darling, stay where you are. The fire department is two minutes away. Don’t move, okay?”
Through the earpiece, the sound of the little girl’s ragged breathing mingled with an agonizing silence. But then, soft knocks echoed in the distance.
—“Lili! It’s Elisa. Are the footprints still there?”
—“No… now I hear noise at the window…”
Elisa thought quickly. It could simply be the wind or a curious neighbor. But it could also indicate a greater emergency: the little girl was disoriented. The symptoms could be worsening and affecting her senses.
Meanwhile, the emergency team was already climbing the building’s stairs. But when they reached the third floor, the situation became confusing: the door was locked from the inside, just as the mother had instructed her daughter before leaving. The firefighters requested permission to force entry.
—“Lili, darling, you’re going to hear a loud noise, okay? You’re very brave. They’re there to help you.”
The girl replied between sobs:
—“Elisa… it hurts a lot… my legs are swollen… and my throat… it itches…”
Elisa held her breath. Anaphylaxis. They needed access NOW.
The crash echoed throughout the house. Then, the sound of hurried footsteps and firm voices filled the space. Elisa heard everything:
—“We have the youngest one. Systemic reaction. Adrenaline now!”
The operator closed her eyes in relief, but the tension wasn’t over. When the team described the room, the situation became clear: the little girl’s bed was infested with a type of reddish ant, probably from a nest hidden in the building’s old structure.
An extremely unusual… and dangerous case.
Minutes later, Lili was stabilized and taken to the ambulance. Elisa remained on life support until the paramedics confirmed that the girl was conscious and breathing better.
Hours later, Lili’s mother arrived at the hospital, bursting into tears. She couldn’t believe what had happened. And there, in the waiting room, she found Elisa, who had decided to come in person to make sure of the outcome.
The woman clung to her as if she were a family member.
—“Thank you… thank you for not leaving her alone…”
—“I didn’t intend to do it,” Elisa replied, with a tired but sincere smile.
But the case left a disturbing question hanging in the air:
How could such an aggressive nest develop inside a building without anyone noticing?
The firefighters would begin an inspection the following day.
PART 3: The next morning brought a different kind of calm. After a night of observation, Lili was stable, her swelling had gone down, and she was breathing normally. When she saw her mother by the bedside, she let out a long sigh of relief.
Shortly afterward, the firefighters conducted a full inspection of the building. The discovery was as unexpected as it was enlightening: an entire colony had invaded a gap in the wall that led directly into Lili’s room. The ants had entered through an almost invisible crack behind the headboard, expanding unnoticed.
These species, although uncommon in the area, could cause severe reactions in allergic individuals. Lili had the misfortune of being extremely sensitive to them.
The building’s residents, moved by the general fear, organized themselves to carry out renovations, fumigation, and inspections of all the apartments. Lili’s mother received financial and emotional support from her neighbors, who offered to help with schedules, security, and repairs.
At the hospital, Elisa visited the little girl again.
—“Elisa!” shouted Lili, stretching out her arms.
—“How is my brave six-year-old?”
—“Better… I don’t feel any itching anymore.”
The mother approached with eyes full of gratitude.
—“I don’t know how to thank you for what you did…”
“You don’t need to thank me,” Elisa said. “I was just doing my job.”
“Perhaps,” the woman replied. “But not everyone stays on the other end of the phone like you do.”
In the following days, the story spread throughout Zaragoza. Not as a tragedy, but as an example of professionalism, humanity, and teamwork.
The City Council presented an honorary mention to the firefighters, paramedics, and Elisa Torres for their exemplary intervention. Lili, recovered and more cheerful than ever, was invited to present the medals, which brought smiles to everyone in the room.
As the ceremony concluded, the little girl ran towards Elisa and hugged her tightly.
—“You saved me.”
—“You were the bravest,” the operator replied.
That day, Elisa returned to her post with a renewed certainty: even in the darkest situations, a calm voice, a human gesture, or a quick decision could change everything.
Lili returned to her normal life, this time with a renovated, safe, and light-filled room. And although the experience left its mark on everyone involved, it also taught a powerful lesson:
Sometimes, heroes don’t wear shiny uniforms. Sometimes, they simply answer the phone.
