Madeleine McCann went missing in 2007 while on holiday with her family in Portugal
Bone fragments and scraps of old clothing were reportedly discovered during a renewed search by German investigators looking for clues in the long-unsolved disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

Last week, German authorities, assisted by Portuguese police, launched a major operation at Atalaia, a remote, scrub-covered area near the Praia da Luz resort in Portugal—where Madeleine vanished in 2007. The area, often frequented by hikers along the Fisherman’s Trail linking Praia da Luz and Lagos, was sealed off for four days while the German Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) combed the terrain.
One officer told MailOnline:’We always knew it was going to be a waste of time but we have to show cooperation’
The fresh operation, believed to have cost around £300,000, drew attention from both international media and the public. Despite the high costs and effort, sources close to the case suggested the results were underwhelming
An officer told MailOnline: “We always knew this would be a waste of time, but we had to show cooperation. What did they expect to find after 18 years?”
Still, Portuguese media outlets insisted that some of the recovered items—identified as animal bones and pieces of adult clothing—are being sent for further testing. CNN Portugal reported that “several items were seized” and will now be “examined further by the German police.”
Correio da Manhã, one of Portugal’s major dailies, stated that the materials are undergoing laboratory analysis “to assess their potential relevance to the investigation.”
Convicted rapist and paedophile Christian Brueckner, 48, (pictured) has been identified by German prosecutors as the man behind Madeleine’s ‘abduction and murder’
These latest developments coincide with growing speculation over Christian Brueckner, the convicted sex offender and rapist who German authorities in 2020 sensationally named as their main suspect in Madeleine’s disappearance and presumed murder. Now 48, Brueckner is nearing the end of his seven-year prison term for a separate rape conviction.

Though prosecutors claim to have compelling evidence, Brueckner has yet to be charged in the McCann case. He has always denied any involvement.
Brueckner’s release is tentatively scheduled for September 17. However, his lawyer Philipp Marquort cast doubt on that date, citing outstanding fines: “He would need to pay €1,500 in traffic penalties, but the money went towards legal fees. So realistically, I don’t see him being released until early next year.”
Polcie searched the remote Portuguese area for three days
Marquort declined to comment on the Portugal dig directly but noted: “He’ll probably see the news on the TV in his cell. I still believe when he’s released, he’ll leave Germany.”
Permission had been given to search the derelict outbuildings on the scrubland close to where Brueckner used to live
Meanwhile, controversy has erupted over an alternative theory that Portuguese police once tried to investigate but were allegedly blocked by their German counterparts.
According to Correio da Manhã, Portuguese officers received a tip-off about a British man hiding a “dark secret”—that his German wife may have accidentally run over Madeleine while driving drunk, and the couple then covered it up by disposing of her body at sea.
The woman was reportedly drinking near the Ocean Club on the night Madeleine disappeared. A neighbor allegedly told police she overheard a heated argument the next day, with the man shouting: “Why did you bring her?”
The tip, reportedly made in 2018 by the British man’s sister, suggested using an undercover officer to befriend the German wife in an attempt to get a confession. However, German prosecutors allegedly refused to authorize the covert operation, preferring to focus solely on the investigation into Brueckner.
Critics have accused German authorities of ignoring other potential leads in their determination to build a case around Brueckner.
As it stands, the mystery surrounding Madeleine McCann’s disappearance remains unsolved, despite nearly two decades of global attention and multiple investigations. Whether the latest evidence found during the Atalaia dig leads to answers—or simply fuels more speculation—remains to be seen.
