What began as a peaceful Sunday family outing ended in tragedy that has left fans across the country stunned. Around 1:40 PM, on a warm afternoon in Franklin, Tennessee, a terrible accident unfolded at the intersection of Murfreesboro Road and South Royal Oaks Boulevard — changing many lives in a single instant.

Eyewitnesses say a young man behind the wheel of a dark sedan sped through a clear red light while distracted by his phone. He never slowed down, unaware of the  vehicles already moving through the crossing. The resulting collision was so violent that it spun a black  SUV nearly 180 degrees before it slammed into a roadside utility pole with crushing force.

Inside the SUV was a 70-year-old man, driving his family home after lunch. Paramedics expected an ordinary rescue — until a firefighter recognized the passenger behind the wheel

“That’s… Hoda Kotb,” he gasped, unable to believe his eyes.

The confusion was understandable. Hoda Kotb, the beloved morning show anchor and journalist, was behind the wheel, dressed casually with her hair pulled back and sunglasses on. The driver who caused the crash — 23-year-old Nathan Bell — escaped with minor injuries and was treated at the scene. He admitted to texting at the time of the crash. No drugs or alcohol were found in his system, but he was taken into custody and faces charges including reckless driving, ignoring a traffic signal, and vehicular assault

News that it was Hoda Kotb in the accident spread quickly, sending a wave of concern through the broadcasting world and among her millions of devoted viewers.

“I’m absolutely heartbroken,” said co-host Savannah Guthrie. “Hoda is family to all of us — we’re sending her every bit of love and strength.”
