Clara felt as if the cold hospital room was spinning around her. She looked at her daughter’s pale, sweaty face and tried to gather her thoughts. The doctor maintained an outward calm, but in her eyes, a worry impossible to hide was evident.
— “Ana, sweetheart, please… tell us exactly what happened on Saturday night,” the doctor asked gently, leaning toward the little girl.
Ana hesitated. She bit her lip, and tears began to slide down her cheeks.
— “It hurt a lot… and Martín told me not to tell Mom… that she would just worry. He gave me some pills… very bitter. After that… I don’t remember everything clearly.”
Clara felt her blood run cold. Pills? Why on earth would Martín give a child medication without telling anyone?
The doctor reacted immediately:
— “It’s essential to know what substances she ingested. I’ve already called an ambulance, and at the hospital, we will run all the necessary tests. This is not a simple case of indigestion.”
Every minute felt like an eternity. Finally, the ambulance arrived, its blue lights flashing through the consultation room windows. The paramedics carefully transferred Ana onto a stretcher and immediately began stabilization procedures.
Clara walked down the hospital corridor, trying not to break down. Her mind kept returning to the same question: How had she not seen this before? How could she have left her daughter alone with Martín?
During the ride, the doctor whispered to her:
— “The symptoms and what we’ve seen on the ultrasound suggest that Ana’s body has been exposed to something it shouldn’t have. Her liver and stomach show damage. We will have a precise confirmation once the lab tests are completed.”
In the waiting room, Clara felt, for the first time, a burning rage mixed with unbearable guilt. Martín. The man she had trusted with her life and her daughter’s. The man she had believed in. What was he really hiding?
Her phone vibrated. A message from Martín:
“Everything okay? I’m home now. Are you both okay?”
Clara clenched her fists. She didn’t reply. At that very moment, the doctor emerged from the emergency room door.
— “Ana’s condition is stable, but we have serious suspicions. We must notify the authorities. It’s very likely she ingested a toxic substance.”
The words “notify the authorities” hit Clara like a lightning bolt. She understood that the nightmare had only just begun.
She looked up at her daughter’s pale face, visible through the glass of the room. And in that instant, she made an irrevocable decision: she would never again allow Martín near the child.
And deep in her heart, she knew that the truth about that weekend would be far darker than she had ever imagined.
