Alejandro stopped in the doorway, unable to believe what he saw. In the center of the kitchen, next to the large oak table, sat two dirty children, their clothes wrinkled and their faces pale, but their eyes wide open. In front of them, a young woman was trying to feed them from a pot barely warmed on the stove.
Her gaze abruptly lifted towards him — surprised, almost frightened.
— Who… who are you? — he stammered.
Alejandro felt his blood boil in his veins. “How dare anyone enter my house?” he thought, but that inner voice abruptly died away when he met the children’s gaze. There was fear in their eyes, but also a spark of hope.
“I own this house,” he replied coldly, in the tone of someone accustomed to giving orders. “And who are you?”
The young woman took a breath, clutching the spoon as if it were a useless weapon.
— My name is Elena. These children… are my younger siblings. Our mother died last week. Our father disappeared. We had nowhere to go. The door was ajar, we went in… to find shelter for at least a few days.
Her words hit him like a punch to the gut. Part of him demanded he call the police immediately and throw them out without hesitation. But another part—the part that had been buried for years under layers of indifference and luxury—compelled him to look more closely.
He approached the table. The children were trembling, but they didn’t move. Alejandro leaned over and noticed that one of them was clutching an old, broken but carefully preserved toy to his chest. It reminded him of his own childhood, when he wasn’t yet a millionaire, but just a poor boy in the forgotten streets of Seville.
He straightened up and stared at Elena.
— You know I could kick you out right now, right?
She lowered her gaze and replied in a low voice:
— I know. But if he does, we have nowhere to sleep. Maybe at the station. I… I’m only nineteen. They’re all I have left.
A thick, almost unbearable silence fell. Alejandro felt anger mixed with a disquiet he hadn’t experienced in many years. In business, decisions were made quickly, coldly. But there, in his Madrid kitchen, two pairs of eyes silently pleaded with him.
Finally, he took a deep breath.
— Stay. But from today, everything will change.
Elena stared at him in astonishment. The children instinctively approached him, as if they sensed that his decision was giving them a chance.
Alejandro realized he had just embarked on a dangerous path. He was no longer the solitary millionaire seeking silence. From that moment on, his destiny was intertwined with that of those strangers who were about to completely upend his life.
