Coronation Street fans have been left heartbroken after Sue Devaney confirmed her beloved character Debbie Webster is being written out of the soap in a deeply emotional storyline that will span across 2025 and into 2026.

The actress, who has been a fan-favourite since her return in 2019, revealed that Debbie will be diagnosed with dementia — a devastating twist that will ultimately mark the end of her time on the cobbles.

Reacting to the news, long-time viewers have expressed their dismay, with many saying: “We’re too disappointed! They’re killing off a Corrie legend!”

Speaking about how she felt when she was told the storyline, Sue admitted:

“It was a mixture of emotions. Kate Brooks [Corrie’s executive producer] called me into her office and said, ‘We’ve got this brilliant story – we want to give Debbie dementia.’”

While many fans were furious, assuming Sue must also be upset by the development, the actress has now clarified:

“Some reports claimed I was angry about this storyline, but that’s completely untrue. The only reason I was concerned was because I wanted to make sure I could tell it properly. It’s a huge honour and privilege to be trusted with something like this.”

Sue also explained why she believes Debbie is the right character for such a powerful arc:

“A lot of people asked, ‘Why Debbie? She’s so vibrant and full of life.’ But I actually think that’s exactly where a great story lies — because she has everything. You know, she’s sharp, witty, obsessed with success and money, and every word matters to her. So when someone like that faces this illness, the impact is enormous. That’s what will make her journey so powerful to watch.”

The news is particularly bittersweet for fans who have long hoped Debbie would be given a bigger role. Many wanted to see her and Ronnie Bailey take over the Rovers and lead major storylines — not exit in heartbreak.

One soap insider shared:

“Debbie is one of the last remaining characters with that classic northern charm Corrie is known for. Losing her is a big blow — it’s a risk to sacrifice someone who brings both comedy and heart to the show.”

Still, producers are confident that Sue Devaney’s performance will be unforgettable. The storyline will also bring the Webster family into focus, with strong material for Kevin, Abi, Sally, and Ronnie.

While fans brace themselves for the slow emotional unraveling of Debbie’s story, one thing is certain: Sue Devaney will deliver a masterclass in performance — and Coronation Street will lose one of its finest.
