The View was forced to hit pause on its Tyler Perry interview Tuesday after Sara Haines brought the media mogul to tears.

During a conversation about the Prime Video documentary Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story, Haines acknowledged the film’s titular heroine: Perry’s late mother Willie Maxine Perry, who died in 2009. Acknowledging the profound impact the film had on her, Haines noted that she “met Maxine through all of it. I didn’t know her… [and the documentary] shows how much you endured as a child.”

That’s when Perry cut her off.

“Wait a minute,” he said, struggling to find the words. “That took me. Wow… How did that hit me so hard? You met my moth— my mother through it? That’s… wow! Wow, thank you.

“To say you met her through that, that takes me somewhere because she— this woman endured so much pain,” he explained, fighting back tears. “She didn’t have some legacy, but she had me, and to say that I introduced her to you… you got me there, man. I’m sorry, s–t! Lord, have mercy! Thank you! I appreciate that very much.”

Perry announced his mother’s death on his website in December 2009. “My mother is the wisdom of Madea,” he said at the time. “She was 64. Thank you for all your prayers.”
