Heinrich stood motionless, his mouth slightly open and his eyes wide. Clara moaned on the floor, her cheeks flushed and her gaze lost between rage and humiliation. Her friend, pale as a statue, clutched her bag, unsure whether to run away or disappear.
Sofia sat up slowly, with that icy calm that precedes a storm.
“Heinrich,” she said in a low but sharp voice, “if you get up now, you’ll remember this day for the rest of your life. But not fondly.”
The words hung in the air like a knife. The man slumped back down on the sofa, not daring to say anything.
Sofia turned to Clara, who was trying to stand up.
“Listen to me carefully,” she said with a chilling serenity. “In my house, you don’t give orders, you don’t speak to me in that tone, and you certainly don’t throw your dirty laundry in my face. You’ve crossed a line. Now you have two options: either pack your things and leave, or apologize and learn what respect means. Either way, you’re no longer the queen of this house.”
Clara opened her mouth to answer, but Sofia’s gaze stopped her in her tracks.
—And if you raise your voice to me again —she added in an icy whisper—, I swear that next time I won’t hold back with words.
The girl went pale. She gathered her things with trembling hands and, ten minutes later, the door slammed shut behind her.
Heinrich remained motionless. The silence was so thick that only the ticking of the clock could be heard. A few minutes passed before he murmured:
—Perhaps… you’ve gone a little too far, my dear.
Sofia turned slowly. There was no anger on her face, only a firm serenity, the kind that comes from someone who has just seen clearly.
“The past? No, Heinrich. I’ve simply kept quiet for too long. I’ve washed, I’ve cooked, I’ve endured in silence. But today I opened my eyes. And I saw who I’ve really been living with.”
He paused.
—You know what’s funny? In every relationship, there comes a day when the mask falls. Today yours fell.
She grabbed her bag, put on her coat, and left without looking back. Heinrich was left alone, sitting in the middle of the living room, with Clara’s underwear still on the floor—a silent symbol of the shame he could never erase.
Sofia descended the stairs slowly. Each step was lighter than the last. The cold November air hit her face, but she smiled. For the first time in years, she didn’t feel anger. She felt freedom.
He didn’t go to work that day. He went into a small café in the center of Vienna, ordered a black coffee, and sat by the window. He watched the city wake up, calm and indifferent.
She took out her phone, opened a real estate app, and started looking for a new apartment. This time—just for herself.
When the waitress served her coffee, Sofia looked up and smiled.
—You know, life is strange. Sometimes someone has to throw their panties in your face to remind you who you really are.
The waitress laughed, not quite understanding. But Sofia knew perfectly well.
For the first time in a very, very long time, he felt free.
