A widower for years, Don Melchor lived in the small mining town of Santa Esperanza, raising his two children, Nicolás and Rosa, alone. He was a 65-year-old man, marked by tireless work in the mine, and every cold morning he dragged himself, exhausted, back to his humble adobe house. His body, increasingly worn down by the dust and the effort, barely responded, but his will remained strong for his children.
Despite the pain in his chest and his shortness of breath, when he got home, Nicolás and Rosa would run to greet him joyfully. He would lift them up, hiding his pain, and with clumsy but loving hands, prepare their lunch: the same as always, rice and potatoes. “Nothing in life is achieved without sacrifice,” he would tell them, hoping to give them a future he never had.
Time marched on, and the years passed. Rosa, the youngest, remained steadfast in her studies, and her hard work was rewarded with a scholarship to study abroad. Although worried about the expenses, Don Melchor wouldn’t let her turn it down. “Daughter, you’ve earned it. I’ll take care of everything. I’ll be here working harder than ever.” And with those words, Rosa left, leaving her father with a loneliness that now felt even deeper.
Meanwhile, Nicolás began to stray from the path his father had laid out for him. He started hanging out with bad company and finding refuge in alcohol. Don Melchor, worried, confronted him one afternoon: “Son, I beg you. Go back to school. Don’t go down that road.” But Nicolás looked at him with disdain. “That’s enough, old man! Let me live my life!” Those words broke Don Melchor’s heart.
The routine became an endless cycle: Don Melchor would leave the mine, find Nicolás at the town’s cantina, take him home drunk, put him to bed, and return to the mine. Despite everything, Nicolás never showed gratitude; he only treated him with contempt and asked him for money.
One day, Don Melchor’s health finally gave way. He collapsed in the darkness of the mine. The town doctor was clear and devastating: his lungs were severely damaged from so many years of work. He had little time left to live.

Returning home with this news, Don Melchor’s hopes were dashed. He saw his son drinking and laughing with his friends. He went over, determined to take him home, but then he heard the words that shattered him. “My old man disgusts and embarrasses me,” Nicolás said, unaware that his father was nearby. “Always wearing the same tattered clothes and those old shoes. I’m ashamed to be his son.”
Don Melchor froze. He looked at his worn clothes, his patched shoes, and silent tears fell. He returned home heartbroken, and that night he made a decision.
In the gloom of an ordinary day, she went to the notary’s office and, without anyone knowing, completed the paperwork for the sale of the house. She wrote a brief farewell letter to Nicolás: “Son, I’m leaving. Forgive me for what I’m doing… I’ve done everything I could for you… Don’t look for me. This house is no longer mine.” She packed her few belongings into an old suitcase and, without looking back, left the only home she had ever known.
With half the money he earned, Don Melchor paid for Rosa’s studies abroad. His health was deteriorating rapidly, so, not wanting to be a burden on anyone, he decided to move to a nursing home in the city, far from everything that had been his life.
Two years passed. Rosa returned to Santa Esperanza, now a professional. But when she arrived home, she found other people living there. Desperate, she searched for answers. It was an elderly neighbor who, with tears in his eyes, told her the sad story: Nicolás’s abuse, her father’s silent suffering, the sale of the house, and his disappearance.
Rosa, her veins filled with rage and grief, found Nicolás at their usual bar. “How could you do this to Dad?” she screamed. “He gave everything for you, and you treated him like he meant nothing!” Nicolás, drunk and indifferent, didn’t understand his sister’s pain. In a surge of justice, Rosa reported him, and Nicolás was arrested.
But Rosa never stopped searching for her father. Although the town doctor told her he was probably no longer alive, she didn’t lose hope. Finally, after much effort, she discovered the truth: her father was in a nursing home, far away from everything.
When she entered the nursing home room, her heart broke. Don Melchor was lying there, frail, on a ventilator. The doctor confirmed her worst fears: he had only a few days to live. Rosa knelt beside him, showing him her first-place medal and her professional certificate. “Dad, I did it. This is all thanks to you,” she said, her voice breaking. “I’m sorry for not being there for you sooner.”
Don Melchor looked at her with eyes full of love. “No, my daughter,” he whispered. “It was I who was happy because of you. My happiness, my pride, everything is you.” But then, Don Melchor asked her for something Rosa didn’t expect. “There’s one last thing, my daughter. I want to see Nicolás. Bring him here. I want to see him before I go.”
Rosa, confused and filled with suppressed anger, felt something in her heart break when she saw her father so vulnerable. “Okay, Dad. I’ll do it for you.”
With a heavy heart, Rosa managed to get Nicolás out of jail and led him to the nursing home. When Nicolás entered the room, something changed in Don Melchor’s face. Despite his frailty, his eyes lit up with a serene joy. “At last,” he said, his voice trembling. “My beloved children are here, my family.”
With tremendous effort, Don Melchor took a small package wrapped in newspaper and, with trembling hands, handed it to Nicolás. Just as Nicolás took the package in his hands, Don Melchor breathed his last, and his soul departed this world.
Rosa burst into tears. Nicolás, holding the package, trembled. With desperate speed, he unwrapped it. Inside he found a letter and a small cloth bag. The letter, written in his father’s weary handwriting, contained his last words:
“I love you very much, son, and forgive me if I haven’t been the father you wanted and if I disgusted you. For years I neglected myself to give you everything… My clothes and shoes don’t matter to me, because what I always wanted was your happiness. I love you both… I love you, son. Take care of your sister and get ahead. Stay away from those bad friends… Please, son, change and use this money to get ahead. I know you can do it because I believe in you. With love, your father.”
The other half of the money from the sale of the house was in the small bag.
At that moment, Nicolás understood. His father had always loved him, had always believed in him, despite everything. He collapsed to his knees beside the bed, weeping uncontrollably. “Forgive me, Dad! Forgive me! I promise I’ll change!”
Rosa, who had been watching her brother, approached slowly and, without saying a word, embraced him. At that moment, both siblings, marked by grief and regret, clung to each other, while the echoes of their father’s words resonated in their hearts. Together, with tears and silent sighs, they looked one last time at Don Melchor, knowing that, although he was no longer there, his love and sacrifice had, in the end, brought their family together.
