American Idol winner Jamal Roberts returned to his roots on Saturday night, delivering a powerful and emotional performance at his Welcome Home Celebration concert in Meridian, Mississippi. Over 4,000 people packed Q.V. Sykes Park to witness the hometown hero bring his signature blend of heart, soul, and stage presence to life.

Roberts, who captured the hearts of over 26 million viewers during his Idol journey, opened his set with fan favorites like “Liar” by Jelly Roll and his popular rendition of “Heal.” But it was a special, deeply personal moment that stole the night.

As the music slowed and the crowd fell silent, Roberts wrapped his arms around his mother and began singing a soulful ballad dedicated to her. “It’s always been love in my hometown,” Roberts told the crowd. “I appreciate everybody taking time out of their busy schedules just to come and see me. They’ve been following my journey since before American Idol, before Sunday Best, so it’s always good to come home and show love.”

“I remember Jamal when he was running around the school halls, being in class, singing, and everything. He is the foundation of Meridian, and we just want to thank him for bringing positive attention to Meridian and the great state of Mississippi.”

Young fans like Jenesis Young, one of Roberts’ students, were just as excited. “I’m very excited to see him perform on stage and sing all of his songs, because I like to hear him sing,” she said, beaming.

Roberts also used the event to clear the air about recent rumors, openly thanking former mayor Percy Bland and the county officials for stepping in to support the celebration. “I’m not into politics,” he said. “I just genuinely love Percy… he’s always shown love. Somehow, things didn’t look right to some people, but we still pulled it off. People still came and showed support.”
