In a quiet moment that spoke louder than words, Jamal Roberts performed “Heal” a cappella while seated on the Portia Show. There were no instruments, no background music—just his soft, controlled voice delivering every note with heart.

From PE Teacher to Idol: Jamal Roberts’ Journey of Faith and Family
Just days after being named the winner of American Idol Season 23, Jamal Roberts is still adjusting to his new life. “I’m still numb to the fact, still in disbelief a little bit that it happened,” he told 16 WAPT’s Bethal Miles.

Before his big break, Roberts was a physical education teacher at Crestwood Elementary School in Meridian. Known for his love of students and his habit of singing in class, he left a big mark on his school community. “The love I have for the kids is genuine,” he said. “I might not be able to teach again with this new schedule, but I’ll always find time to go back and inspire them.”

Many people from all over gathered at Q.V. Sykes Park for Meridian native and American Idol winner Jamal Roberts’ Welcome Home Celebration concert.

Roberts, a proud father of three, often shares moments with his daughters—Harmoni, Lyrik, and a newborn—on social media. His faith and family have kept him grounded through every stage of his journey. “Church is my background, and it’s what I can rely on when singing any song,” he said.

Looking ahead, Roberts will perform at the Jackson Convention Complex on September 19. He says he hopes to continue using his platform to remind kids—and everyone else—to keep dreaming big.
